The Norwich Research Park hosted a two-day workshop on the microbiology of extreme environments in the Council Chamber at UEA on 13-14th February. Around 40 attendees from nine different countries attended and were treated to some outstanding research seminars from both senior researchers and early career researchers. The topics covered deep-sea to alpine lakes, volcanoes, caves and mines and other environments where specialised microbes live. The unifying theme of the workshop was how to combine traditional-cultivation based approaches in microbiology with a wide range of cutting edge molecular microbial ecology techniques. The Workshop, organised by Marcela Hernández and Colin Murrell, provided excellent networking opportunities, and a number of new international collaborations in microbial ecology have been initiated
